Human Rights House Tbilisi celebrated the International Human Rights Defenders Day for the sixth time this year with interesting speakers and many guests. The main highlight of this year’s event was a right to peaceful protest.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Lela Tsiskarishvili – Chairperson of the board of Human Rights House Tbilisi; H. E. Bergljot Hovland – Ambassador of Norway to Georgia; Douglas Webb – UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Georgia.

The thematic reports of human rights defenders were related to various protests that took place during the year. Human Rights Houses Foundation’s Kety Abashidze spoke about the problems and challenges faced by human rights defenders. Among the speakers were Eto Arsanidze, Samira Bairamova, Makuna Gochiashvili, Mariam Kvaratskhelia, Tamar Jakeli, Mariam Nikuradze. After thematic testimonies by Human Rights Defenders, Lana Gogoberidze’s documentary ‘’Mother And Daughter, Or The Night Is Never Complete’’ was screened.

Human Rights Defenders Day recognizes the particularly important role of human rights defenders in the development of democracy and strengthening of peace, as recognized by various international instruments, including the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, that celebrates 25 years anniversary in 2023.

This year’s event was held in cooperation with the Human Rights House Foundation, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP Georgia) and the Georgian Documentary Film Association – DOCA.
